LUMINAL SELF: ENDOSCOPY AND A NEW BODY IMAGE

IN PROGRESS

Luminal Self: Endoscopy and a New Body Image is a cross-disciplinary, arts-based investigation into gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, their visualization by scientific and artistic means, and their effects upon patients’ lives and conceptions of self and body. Its public exhibition will present an educational treatise on GI issues, comprising patients’ personal testimonies (both verbal and visual), general medical information, and a series of portraits modeled on patients' endoscopic scans. Luminal Self seeks to promote empathy, dialogue, and body literacy, defying the social stigmatization of GI disorders.

Co-PIs: Ghislaine Fremaux-Valdez (artist and Associate Professor of Art, TTU), Dr. Marc Zuckerman (gastroenterologist and Professor of Medicine, TTUHSC El Paso), Nancy Casner (Certified Clinical Research Coordinator, TTUHSC El Paso).

As this project is currently underway, I am making just a few endoscopic portraits, preliminarily photographed in my studio, accessible below. Click to view full-size images and information.
